Subject: First show!
Subject: First show!
Talked a couple of buddies into driving all night for this show. One had never listened to the band but perhaps trusted my judgement. Probably didn't hurt when he saw the excitement on the other dude when i told him the Dead were within driving distance. We got there, took a nap in that hot car and then ate lots of yellow watermelon. Found some tiny black pyramids for dessert and we were set. I remember the skydivers, maybe 5 of them? I told everyone it was the band. I think i believed it myself after a while.
I wandered around with that headful and remember getting to the front near the spread out tapers. What i remember most is the fear on their faces as i walked around. They all put their hands up to protect their gear so i must have been a mess. I quickly figured out i needed to sit and chill before i made someone mad.
Wish i had my ticket to this show. I remember we dropped them in a barrel on the way in and as you left, you could reach in and grab a handful of tickets on the way out. I didn't go through the gate on the way out though, i climbed a fence and ripped my new t-shirt. Why, i'm not sure, but i was a little shaken after spending the night on the ground in that field. The band played late and i just layed down where i was rather than find my way back to the car. I knew my buddies wouldn't leave me. The reason i was so shaken was that i awoke to a stabbing poke to my ribs. I grabbed the object doing the poking and looked up at some sort of deputy on horseback with a pole jabbing me in the ribs telling me it was time to go home. At first i was a little freaked, did i have anything on me? Was i in trouble, etc. then i saw 6 or 7 dudes on horseback scattered through the racetrack waking up folks just like me just after daylight. No scenes were made, they just wanted to start the cleanup and needed us gone.
The show was a blast and it was a real treat to finally hear it years later. My first listen was a terrible AUD copy on casette and thankfully better copies have surfaced. What a memory.

I wore out a copy of this tape I had in college in 1986. The level of playing is so inspired, the set list is a dream and the crowd cannot contain its joy and enthusiasm. Highlites include one of the best Scarlet-Fire's I've heard, the intro into Truckin' has a hesitation jam where Jerry holds the band off from entering fully into the tune so he can have just a little more fun - when the band comes back in it's just that much sweeter and the crowd eats it up!

Subject: Frosty's Picks for the Hearing Impaired
I have major hearing problems. It’s called tinnitus and for those of you who don’t know it is a constant ringing in your ears. Therefore, it is hard for me to find audience shows that are of good enough quality for me to listen to without doing further damage to my hearing (by having to turn up the volume past 5 to even tell what song is being played!). I am not saying anything about these shows except that as a person with major hearing lose, these are some of the shows that I have on my I-Pod. Of course some are better than others. However, I am not giving any of these shows a review. I can always find something good in every show…...as long as I can hear it!!!! Here is my list for today, 9/20/08:
7.6.84, 10.15.84, 6.19.91,
7.18.89, 6.21.84, 9.6.85,

Pretty good AUD source. It a little Phil-lite for my taste. The SBD is a little better in that regard. Perfect setlist tight playing.

I've had a 2nd set sbd of this for about 20 years that was a staple of my car tape box until I "upgraded" to CD player about year ago(Yeah I'm a slow learner). Now I'm burning CD versions of all those old favorite tapes of mine. Listen for the shouts of "Happy Birthday Jerry!" and "We love you!" durning a sweet '82 Morning Dew. Nice to finnaly have the whole show.

This tape made its way to me about six years ago. It never left my little tape box. On the lake, on the river, camping etc. This second set has always been a favorite for me. Scarlet->Fire is A+. Jerry is going to town with Bobby and Brent working it as well. Guaranteed to increasingly get your juices flowing. Havent heard the 1st set yet. I have been eagerly awaiting 1982 shows on the archive. Much thanks to everyone who makes the archive downloads possible. "I had one of those flashes I been there before, been there before". Music is an 8 star. Sound makes this one a 4 star.
